Choose Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi if you have suitable wiring and want continuous local recording; choose eufy E340 if seeing packages below the main camera matters most. The eufy C31 offers another route to wired continuous recording, while Reolink’s PoE model suits homes with Ethernet at the door.
“Without a subscription” means the listed local recording option does not require a recurring storage plan. It does not mean every optional service is free, that internet access is unnecessary, or that the device will receive updates forever. This guide separates power, recording, storage and kit contents so you can compare complete installations.
These are specification-based recommendations using official product and support pages. We have not performed a new side-by-side installation, detection or night-vision test. Model names below link directly to the manufacturer; stock, price and included accessories depend on your country and selected bundle.

Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi: for wired local recording
The Reolink Video Doorbell WiFi uses wired power even though its network connection can be wireless. It supports 5MP video, 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi and local recording. Configure the recording schedule and storage; “always powered” does not automatically mean every moment is being saved.
Choose the variant carefully. Reolink describes the black version as a wider 4:3 view and the white version as a taller 3:4 view; package detection is specifically advertised for the white model. Do not transfer those capabilities between colors or assume they match the battery doorbell.
Before buying: Check the current installation manual, transformer requirements, storage-card inclusion and chime compatibility. The model-specific FAQ is a better reference than a generic “works with existing wiring” claim. A compatible NVR or hub can add cost even though it removes the need for a cloud-storage subscription.
eufy Video Doorbell E340: for a separate package camera
The eufy Video Doorbell E340 combines a forward-facing camera with a downward-facing camera and includes 8GB of local storage. Its 2K headline specification should not be read as proof that both sensors produce identical video. The useful distinction is the separate view of the doorstep.
The removable battery is required even with wired power: wiring tops it up. This is an event-recording recommendation, not a promise of continuous 24/7 recording. A busy entrance, temperature and settings affect charging needs and how quickly older clips are overwritten.
Before buying: Compare the standalone package with HomeBase and chime bundles. Do not pay a premium for accessories you already own. Eufy advertises IP65 protection for this model; follow its mounting and operating limits rather than treating that rating as a storm guarantee.
eufy Video Doorbell C31: for flexible power and microSD storage
The Video Doorbell C31 is a 2K doorbell with a removable battery and microSD storage. It is not the C30 or a similarly named indoor camera. Eufy specifies a 16–24V, 30VA transformer and bypassing the existing chime to enable continuous recording and pre-roll.
Use battery mode for event recording when wiring is impractical. For round-the-clock recording, budget for the required electrical setup and confirm the intended storage configuration supports it. Being able to attach doorbell wires is not enough to establish that the transformer meets the requirement.
Before buying: The memory card is an extra unless your selected kit explicitly includes it. Eufy’s storage FAQ separates on-device microSD recording from HomeBase storage. Read the compatibility notes for any HomeBase features you intend to use.
Reolink Video Doorbell PoE: for Ethernet installations
The Reolink Video Doorbell PoE uses an Ethernet cable for data and compatible Power over Ethernet equipment for power. It makes sense when you already have a wired camera system or can run cable to the entrance. It is a separate model from the WiFi version, not a setting you can turn on in any doorbell.
Local card or compatible NVR recording avoids a mandatory cloud storage plan. Continuous recording still needs suitable storage and configuration. Verify the chosen color’s viewing orientation, recorder compatibility and included chime on the exact product page.
Before buying: Add the PoE switch or injector, cable route and installation work to your comparison. This can be the wrong choice for a rented apartment even if the camera itself is inexpensive. A wired connection also does not keep the system running through a power outage without a suitable backup supply.
Choosing a supported app
The earlier list mixed S220 and S330 kits, add-on doorbells and an imprecisely named “Reolink 5MP Doorbell with Home Hub.” Those are not interchangeable packages. This shortlist uses exact manufacturer models instead of retaining ambiguous retailer offers. An older model can still be useful, but its hub requirement, condition and support should be checked before comparing its price with a complete new kit.
The real cost of a subscription-free doorbell
Compare doorbell + storage + chime or hub + power equipment + installation. A cheap add-on camera can cost more overall if it requires a base station. Check the same configuration at each retailer and read the product identifier, not only the photograph. Avoid paying more for an old bundle simply because its listing still calls it a flagship.
We do not maintain a fixed “cheapest” ranking or permanent sale price. A good offer is one that meets your recording needs at a competitive total installed cost. Optional cloud backups, extra devices and future service changes are outside the no-mandatory-storage-plan claim.
Storage, privacy and installation checks
- Local is not automatically offline. Apps, remote viewing and notification services can still use internet infrastructure. Eufy explicitly notes that thumbnail previews can be temporarily stored in the cloud. Review the settings you enable.
- Choose where evidence lives. A card inside a stolen or damaged doorbell may be lost with it. A compatible recorder elsewhere in the home changes that risk, but also adds a device and maintenance.
- Check the view before drilling. Door-frame width, steps, walls and mounting angle affect whether you can see a visitor and a parcel. Resolution alone does not guarantee readable faces or labels.
- Test the installed system. Check daytime and nighttime clips, the recording timeline, app notifications and the indoor chime. Export a sample clip so you know how to keep evidence before it is overwritten.
- Follow electrical and weather instructions. Use the manufacturer’s specified supply and installation method. If you cannot identify the existing transformer safely, use a qualified installer.
- Secure the account. Use a unique password, enable available multifactor authentication, update firmware and limit shared access.
Frequently asked questions
Can I record video without a monthly plan?
Yes, with the supported local storage configuration described for each model. Check whether the memory card, recorder or hub is included. A free live view alone is not the same as recorded history.
Does a wired doorbell always record continuously?
No. Some wiring only charges a battery, and some models save motion events rather than continuous video. Check the exact model, operating mode, storage and recording schedule.
Will it work if the internet goes down?
Local recording may continue if the doorbell, storage and local network still have power and the configuration supports it. Remote viewing and push notifications may stop. Test your own setup rather than assuming all functions work offline.
Do these cameras prevent package theft?
No camera guarantees prevention or identification. A useful camera angle, retained footage and reliable alerts can help you understand an event, but they do not guarantee a parcel will remain safe.
