Your phone’s lock screen protects the whole device — but it does nothing once the phone is unlocked and sitting on a desk, handed to a kid, or passed around to show one photo. That is the gap WhatsApp’s app lock closes. With it on, opening WhatsApp demands your fingerprint, Face ID, or device biometrics again — even if the phone itself is already open.

This guide covers the current paths on Android and iOS: Screen Lock / biometrics, Chat Lock with a secret code, and what these features still cannot stop. Pair app lock with disappearing chats from our disappearing messages guide and account MFA from how to enable MFA and passkeys.

Why WhatsApp needs its own lock

WhatsApp stores message previews, media, and payments-adjacent details that a casual glance can expose. Biometric app lock is not encryption of your chats on disk — end-to-end encryption already covers transit — but it stops shoulder-surfing and “borrow my phone for a second” snooping. Think of it as a second door after the lock screen.

Turn on fingerprint or Face ID on Android

On a current Android WhatsApp build:

  1. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy → App lock (wording may say Screen lock / Fingerprint lock).
  2. Toggle Unlock with biometrics (or fingerprint / face, depending on your OEM).
  3. Choose when to require unlock: immediately, after 1 minute, or after longer idle — shorter is safer on a shared phone.
  4. If biometrics are greyed out, set up a fingerprint or face unlock first under the phone’s Settings → Security / Biometrics, then return to WhatsApp.

Samsung, Pixel, and OnePlus skins sometimes nest “App lock” one level deeper under Privacy. Search “App lock” inside WhatsApp Settings if you do not see it. Dual WhatsApp installs (work + personal) need the lock enabled in each profile — see using two WhatsApp accounts on Android.

Turn on Face ID or Touch ID on iPhone

On iPhone:

  1. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Privacy → Screen Lock.
  2. Turn on Require Face ID (or Touch ID on older models).
  3. Confirm with Face ID / Touch ID when prompted.
  4. Optionally enable requiring Face ID after leaving WhatsApp for a short time — same idea as Android’s timeout.

If Screen Lock will not enable, check iOS Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID) and allow Face ID for WhatsApp. Also confirm WhatsApp is updated from the App Store — older builds lag behind Privacy menu changes.

Chat Lock, Secret Code, and locked chats

Chat Lock hides specific chats behind an extra unlock (and optionally a secret code) so they leave the main chat list. Useful for sensitive threads without locking the entire app every time.

  • Long-press a chat → Lock chat (or open the chat → menu → Lock).
  • Unlock Locked chats from the Locked chats folder using biometrics.
  • Set a Secret code if offered so locked chats stay hidden even if someone opens WhatsApp with your face after you unlock the phone for them once.

Chat Lock is complementary to app-wide Screen Lock — use both when the phone is frequently unlocked around other people.

What biometrics do not cover

Biometric lock does not:

  • Stop someone who already has your unlocked notifications previewing messages on the lock screen — tighten notification privacy separately.
  • Replace two-step verification for account takeover (Settings → Account → Two-step verification).
  • Protect WhatsApp Web / Desktop sessions already linked — review Linked devices and log out unknowns.
  • Hide media already saved to the camera roll or Google Photos / iCloud Photos.

Extra privacy habits that pair well

Practical stack: phone lock + WhatsApp Screen Lock + Chat Lock for the sensitive few + disappearing messages on high-risk chats + two-step verification with an email you control. Official setup notes live in WhatsApp’s FAQ. Skip third-party “WhatsApp lock” APKs — they are a common malware vector.

FAQs

Does Face ID work the same as fingerprint lock?

Yes for the purpose of this feature: WhatsApp asks the OS for a biometric confirmation. Face ID and fingerprints are both fine; pick what your phone supports.

Will WhatsApp lock after every notification?

No. It locks when you open the app (or after the idle timeout you set). Notification banners still need separate privacy settings.

Can someone unlock WhatsApp with a photo of my face?

Modern Face ID / face unlock is designed to resist simple photos. Still keep a strong device passcode as fallback.

Does Chat Lock sync across phones?

Locked state is device/account-feature dependent; treat each linked phone as needing its own privacy check.

Should I use a PIN instead of biometrics?

If the OS offers a WhatsApp-specific PIN/secret code for Chat Lock, use it as backup. For app open, biometrics are faster and usually safer than a short shared PIN.
