Gmail’s writing aids used to mean one quiet feature: Smart Compose — grey ghost text that finishes your sentence as you type. In 2026 that sits beside stronger options: Help me write and Gemini in Gmail, which can draft, shorten, or formalize a whole message from a short prompt. You do not need all of them on; you need the right switch for how you actually write.

Below are the current paths on Android and desktop, plus fixes when suggestions vanish. For quieter privacy while you compose, see blocking email tracking in Gmail and Chrome and protecting email from hackers.

Smart Compose vs Help me write vs Gemini

  • Smart Compose — inline completions while you type; accept with Tab (desktop) or the on-screen suggestion (mobile).
  • Smart Reply — short chip replies above the keyboard / compose area; different from Compose.
  • Help me write / Gemini — prompt-based draft, rewrite, or tone change inside compose. Needs a Google account with the feature rolled out (personal, Workspace, or Gemini eligibility varies by region and plan).

Use Smart Compose for everyday speed — meeting notes, polite follow-ups, the tenth “thanks, noted” of the day. Use Help me write when you are staring at a blank reply and need a first draft you will heavily edit. Mixing both is fine; just do not send unedited AI text to a client.

Turn Smart Compose on (Android)

On the Gmail Android app:

  1. Open Gmail → profile picture / Menu → Settings.
  2. Select your account.
  3. Find Smart features / Smart Compose (labels move occasionally) and turn suggestions on.
  4. Also check Google account → Data & privacy → Smart features in Google apps if Gmail alone stays empty — account-level smart features must be allowed.

Compose a new message and type a normal greeting; grey suggestions should appear after a few words. Swipe or tap to accept. If you use multiple Google accounts in the same app, repeat the toggle per account — work and personal do not always share the same smart-feature flag.

Turn Smart Compose on (desktop Gmail)

On mail.google.com:

  1. Click the gear → See all settings → General.
  2. Enable Smart Compose and optionally Smart Compose personalization (learns your phrasing; turn off if you share a machine profile).
  3. Save changes at the bottom of the page.
  4. In compose, press Tab when grey text appears to accept. Esc dismisses a bad suggestion without inserting it.

Workspace admins can disable smart features org-wide — if toggles are missing, ask IT rather than hunting third-party extensions. Browser zoom and some “Gmail enhancer” extensions also break grey text; test in a clean profile if nothing appears.

Use Help me write / Gemini drafting

Where Gemini / Help me write is available in compose, look for the pencil / Gemini icon in the toolbar. Typical flow:

  1. Click Help me write (or Gemini).
  2. Describe the email in one or two sentences (audience, goal, tone, any hard constraints like “under 120 words”).
  3. Generate, then use shorten / elaborate / formalize if offered.
  4. Edit heavily before Send — fix names, dates, numbers, and anything that sounds generic.

Official feature notes and rollout caveats are in Google Mail Help. Availability differs by language, account type, and age settings. iOS Gmail follows the same idea via Settings → your account → smart features when Google has enabled the buttons for your build.

When suggestions stop appearing

If Smart Compose disappears:

  • Confirm you are online and using a supported language for suggestions.
  • Disable conflicting compose extensions (clipboard, grammar, or “AI write” add-ons often collide).
  • Try an Incognito / private window with extensions off to isolate the conflict.
  • Update the Android app or hard-refresh desktop Gmail (Shift-reload).
  • Recheck account-level Smart features — they override per-app toggles.
  • Switch from HTML compose quirks: plain-text mode can reduce or remove Smart Compose on some accounts.

Privacy and when to turn AI off

Smart Compose personalization and Gemini drafts process content under Google’s smart-features policies. For highly sensitive threads (legal, medical, unreleased financials), draft offline or with smart features off, then paste. Turning features off is as valid as leaving them on — speed is optional; judgment is not.

A simple rule: if you would not paste the draft into a shared Google Doc visible to your whole team, do not feed it to Help me write either.

FAQs

Is Smart Compose the same as Gemini?

No. Smart Compose finishes sentences as you type. Gemini / Help me write builds or rewrites larger drafts from a prompt.

Does Smart Compose work offline?

Usually no — suggestions need a connection. You can still type normally offline; completions resume when you are back online.

Can my Workspace admin see my Help me write prompts?

Admins control whether the feature exists. Review your org’s AI and logging policy; do not put secrets into prompts you would not put in the email itself.

Why is there no Help me write button?

Rollout, language, age, or plan limits. Smart Compose may still work. Check Mail Help for current eligibility.

Should I send AI drafts unedited?

No. Edit for facts, tone, and promises. AI invents confident-sounding details — you own whatever you Send.
