How to avoid email tracking in Gmail and Chrome

Every day, marketers, salespeople — and sometimes people you’d rather not think about — can tell the exact moment you open their email, how many times you read it, and often what device and city you were in when you did. They do it with a technique called email tracking, and most of us have no idea it’s happening. The good news: blocking it in Gmail and Chrome takes about two minutes. Here’s how email tracking works and how to shut it down for good.

How email tracking actually works

The core trick is old and clever: the tracking pixel. When someone sends you a tracked email, they embed a tiny, invisible image — often just 1×1 pixel and completely transparent — hosted on the sender’s server. The moment your email client loads that image, it “phones home” to that server, quietly reporting that the message was opened.

Because loading that pixel is a request to an external server, it can hand the sender a surprising amount of information:

  • Whether and when you opened the email — down to the timestamp.
  • How many times you opened it, and whether you forwarded it to someone who also opened it.
  • Your approximate location, derived from your IP address.
  • The device and email client you used to read it.

A second, related technique is the tracked link. Instead of linking directly to a website, senders route links through a redirect that logs your click before forwarding you on. Together, pixels and tracked links give marketers a detailed picture of your behavior — and give the whole $200-billion email marketing industry its feedback loop.

Why this isn’t just a marketing problem

Tracking pixels are marketed as a legitimate analytics tool, and for a newsletter or sales team, they mostly are. But the same technology is trivially easy to abuse. Free browser extensions let anyone — not just companies — add a hidden pixel to a personal email. That means an ex, a stalker, or a nosy acquaintance can quietly monitor when you read their messages and roughly where you are. A tool built to measure open rates becomes a low-grade surveillance device. That’s the real reason blocking trackers is worth two minutes of your time.

Method 1: Stop Gmail from auto-loading images

Because tracking depends on your client loading a remote image, the simplest defense is to stop images from loading automatically. Gmail has a built-in setting for exactly this.

  1. Open Gmail on the web and click the gear icon in the top-right, then See all settings.
  2. On the General tab, scroll to Images.
  3. Switch from “Always display external images” to “Ask before displaying external images.”
  4. Scroll down and click Save Changes.

On the Gmail mobile app, you’ll find the same option under Settings → your account → Images → Ask before displaying external images.

The trade-off: this also blocks legitimate images, so newsletters and photos won’t render until you tap “Display images below.” It’s the bluntest tool available and it doesn’t distinguish a tracking pixel from a wedding photo — which is why most people prefer a dedicated blocker instead.

One nuance worth knowing: Gmail already routes external images through its own proxy servers, which hides your real IP address from most senders. That blunts location tracking somewhat — but it does not stop the open itself from being reported. You still need to block the pixel to stop the tracking.

Method 2: Install a dedicated tracker blocker (recommended)

The best balance of protection and convenience is a free Chrome extension built specifically to detect and block trackers. These run quietly in the background, block the pixel, and let your real images load normally. Three are worth knowing in 2026.

PixelBlock

PixelBlock is a lightweight, Gmail-focused blocker that runs entirely in your browser — no data ever leaves your device. When it catches a tracking attempt, it blocks the pixel and shows a small red eye at the top of the email so you know someone tried to track you. It’s simple, private, and set-and-forget.

Ugly Email

Ugly Email takes a warn-first approach. Rather than only blocking, it scans your inbox and places a small eye icon next to any message that contains a tracker — so you can see which emails are tracked before you even open them. It then blocks the pixel when you do open the message. Handy if you like knowing who’s watching.

Trocker

Trocker (short for “track blocker”) is the most comprehensive of the three. It works across Gmail, Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, and other webmail services, and it blocks both tracking pixels and tracked links, showing a shield icon whenever it stops something. If you use more than one webmail provider, Trocker is the most flexible pick.

Installing any of them is the same process: open the Chrome Web Store, search the extension by name, click Add to Chrome, then Add extension to confirm. Refresh Gmail and you’re protected — no configuration required. All three are free.

Method 3: Protect your own privacy beyond the inbox

Blocking incoming trackers is step one. A few extra habits round out your defenses:

  • Use plain-text mode for sensitive replies where possible — no images means no pixels.
  • Be cautious with “unsubscribe” links in spam. Clicking one can simply confirm to a spammer that your address is live. For genuinely unwanted senders, use Gmail’s Report spam instead.
  • Consider a privacy-focused browser or a content blocker that stops trackers across the web, not just in email.
  • Keep your extensions few and trusted. Ironically, sketchy browser extensions are themselves a common source of tracking — install only well-reviewed tools from the official store.

Frequently asked questions

Can the sender tell that I blocked their tracker?

Generally, no. When a blocker stops the pixel from loading, the sender simply sees no “open” event — the same result as if you never opened the email at all. They can’t distinguish a blocked open from an unopened message.

Do these blockers work on the Gmail mobile app?

Browser extensions like PixelBlock, Ugly Email, and Trocker work on the desktop version of Gmail in Chrome. On mobile, your best built-in defense is Gmail’s “Ask before displaying external images” setting, which is available in the app.

Is email tracking legal?

In most places, tracking opens for marketing purposes is legal, though privacy regulations like the GDPR require consent for certain kinds of tracking in some regions. Either way, blocking trackers on your own inbox is entirely your right.

Will blocking trackers break my emails?

No. Dedicated blockers only strip the invisible tracking elements — your regular images, formatting, and links keep working normally. Only the “block all images” method affects legitimate images, and even then you can display them with a single click.

The bottom line

Email tracking is quiet, widespread, and easier to abuse than most people realize — but it’s also easy to defeat. Flip Gmail’s image setting to “ask first,” add a free blocker like PixelBlock, Ugly Email, or Trocker to Chrome, and you’ll close the door on invisible pixels without giving up the emails you actually want to see. Two minutes now buys you a meaningfully more private inbox.
