Huawei Nova 3; a high-end phone at a midrange price

Good news for the customers of Pakistan; Huawei Nova 3 is up for grabs.

IFA this year experienced some of the finest high tech smartphones from the leading brands. There was a cutthroat competition with each brand trying its best to steal the show. And no doubt, Huawei was able to make a statement with its new phone Nova 3 that is so less than a high-end phone.

Design and Display

Nova 3 has a 6.3-inch notched display and is comparatively a large phone than the previous phones of the Nova series. The phone may look like it is weary to hold but its weight suggests otherwise. It is lightweight (166gms) and can be used for longer periods. If you are not a fan of huge phones, the size is a bummer.

The phone is curved around the edges which gives it a very classy feel. When it comes to color selection, Huawei absolutely nailed it; you get it in Iris Purple, Airy Blue, Fiery Red, Primrose Gold, and the basic black.

Moreover, the LCD display has a resolution of 1080 by 2340 pixels. Nova 3 also has a rudimentary screen offered by the company’s very own EMUI Android skin.

System and Performance

Nova 3 is powered by Huawei’s in-house octa-core Kirin 970 chipset. This makes your experience seamless without having to worry about the multiple apps that you may be running. The phone has Android 8.1.

The fingerprint scanner is placed at the back that your index finger can easily map its way to. The scanner is accurate and runs very smoothly.

Further, the phone is equipped with a 3750mAh battery and comes with 18W fast-charging which is a plus. The phone also offers two storage options; 4GB RAM with 128GB storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB storage.

Camera

Nova 3 has a dual camera at the back; a 24-megapixel monochrome paired with a 16-megapixel color one having an aperture of F/1.8. The camera is powered by AI which not only provides assistance for scene-recognition but also helps with the Live Focus. Its Portrait and monochrome mode enables you to capture picture-perfect moments in amazing results (We haven’t had the chance to look at the photos but our birds tell that the result is actually pretty amazing).

The dual camera at the front has a 24-megapixel color camera paired with a 2-megapixel depth-collecting unit. Just like other popular brands, Huawei has also come up with an AR emoji known as Dubbed Qmoji. Overall, it looks good.

Specifications

  • 3-inch display
  • Connectivity: 2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Bluetooth 4.2, USB type C
  • Dimensions: 157mm x 73.7mm x 7.3mm
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Android 8.1 (Oreo)
  • HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset
  • 4GB OR 6GB RAM options with 128GB storage expandable up to 256GB by microSD
  • Non-removable Li-Po 3750mAh battery

Price and Release

The company has no plans of launching its phone in the US market. The phone is officially up for sale in Europe, Southeast Asia (including Pakistan). Nova 3 costs EUR385 which sounds good for a mid-ranger. You can get Huawei Nova 3 on Amazon here.

Final Word

Huawei Nova 3 is a reasonable midrange phone that offers a decent amount of features for its price. It has a mainstream-phone-like camera powered by AI. The interface runs smoothly and is free of jitters.

In a nutshell, if you are looking for a phone that looks good, has a decent camera, and is a mid-ranger, Huawei Nova 3 won’t disappoint. However, for a high-end phone, this one has a long way to go.

Stay tuned for more updates!
