Dark mode is built into most apps and sites now, including Google Search. On desktop, Search can follow your device theme or stay locked to Dark or Light. The steps below match Google’s current Search settings (Appearance), not the older footer-only toggle.

Turn on Dark theme for Google Search (desktop)
Enable Dark theme for Google Search on a computer.
Open google.com and run a search (or stay on the homepage)
You can change theme from the homepage or any results page.
Optional: sign in to your Google Account
Signing in keeps the same Search theme across desktop browsers on that account.
Open Settings, then See all settings
On results pages, Settings is usually near the top. Choose See all settings to open the full Search settings page.
Open Appearance and choose Dark theme
Pick Device default (follows your OS), Dark theme, or Light theme.
Click Save
Your choice applies to the Google homepage, results pages, and Search settings.
Quick toggle without opening full settings
Google also offers a faster path: open Settings and choose Dark theme, Light theme, or Device default from that menu. Use this when you only need a quick switch.
Phone and tablet
In a mobile browser, open Google Search, go to Settings, and under Appearance choose Device default, Dark theme, or Light theme. The Google app generally follows your device dark mode setting rather than a separate Search-only control.
Chrome dark mode is separate
Turning on Dark theme for Google Search does not change Chrome’s browser UI theme. Chrome has its own appearance controls. Search Dark theme only affects Google Search pages (homepage, results, and Search settings).
