The tech behind the online casino boom

Avatar Of Guest Author Guest Author Updated: June 6, 2021

Casino games

More people than ever before now enjoy online casinos. Since they began to pop up on the internet shortly after the creation of the World Wide Web in the mid-1990s, the quality of online casino websites, their game variety, and their customer service has only gotten better. Playing online is much more convenient for players who want to fit gaming into their busy lifestyles. Most sites now offer competitive welcome bonuses and sign-up promotions to attract new players.

With so many online casinos now available, casino operators realize that they must keep things fresh by offering regular great game releases and supply top-notch service in order to meet expectations and stand out from the crowd. Alongside all the traditional game varieties like poker, roulette, slots, and blackjack, new games with unique and interesting themes are regularly added. One great feature of an online casino is the ‘live casino’ option, which allows players to play along in actual games in real-time.

The biggest factor that has contributed to the online casino boom is technology. Tech has come a very long way since the conception of the first internet casinos a couple of decades ago. In today’s casinos, the code is much more advanced, the graphics more vibrant, and site speeds and capabilities have improved tremendously. Technology has enabled customer experiences to be more personalized, safer, and entertaining.

How has technology been used to improve the customer experience?

Over the years, casino game operators have been able to fine-tune their offering, learn from customer feedback, and utilize new technology to meet demand and create new entertaining products.

Online casinos have been able to replicate and even improve the social experience provided by bricks and mortar casinos. They are able to host live tournaments and invite players from all over the world to participate in games of poker or other table games together. These games can be streamed online for audiences to enjoy.

Many online casinos are now able to function seamlessly across different device types. A player might log in from their desktop computer at home or from the browser on their phone or tablet while out and about. Some also offer handy mobile apps for smartphones. Technology has been built around the idea of offering consumers convenience, people are used to being able to access the things that they enjoy quickly and easily, and online casino games are no exception to this.

Due to the fast-paced, 24 hour nature of online casinos, customers need to be able to seek help and support from casino representatives at all hours. Developments in IT have led to the creation of chatbots and specialist application programming interface (API) that allow customers to instantly access the information they need even without contacting a customer service agent. Such information could include how to place deposits, withdraw winnings, or play certain games. This also helps to keep overheads done for game operators as they are able to run with less contact center staff.

These websites are now also able to support a much wider variety of payment methods. In addition to the traditional methods of bank transfers or visa debit and credit cards, most sites will allow transactions through services such as PayPal, Neteller, and Trustly. This has enabled sites to open up to much larger customer bases, with visitors from across the globe being able to enjoy them.

Innovation in gaming technology and online casino sites

Part of the success of online casinos is down to the fact that operators and game developers have kept up with the latest technological innovations.

The use of cloud computing by many modern casinos has helped to improve the customer experience. This innovation allows games to be hosted on remote servers and ensures that hosts are able to keep games updated and prevent cheating. It also improves accessibility as players do not need the latest smartphones and hardware in order to run games.

Another exciting and very recent innovation that has been introduced to the world of online casinos is virtual reality (VR). VR enables players to experience realistic casinos in 3D and interact within them as they would a land-based venue.

Many players have welcomed the introduction of cryptocurrency. Some sites are now able to operate completely on cryptocurrency, which is great for those who prefer to use digital money to play online.

Improved safety and security

Online technology has improved the safety of casino sites for their customers. Customers feel safe with the knowledge that their data is encrypted and cannot be stolen by hackers. Most sites have SSL certificates (shown by the padlock icon in the browser search bar), which reassure users that the appropriate steps have been taken to ensure their connection is secure.

Better targeted advertising

Sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) has also been developed to create and target casino advertisements at the most relevant audiences. For instance, someone who searches for online poker in their internet search engine may later see ads within their social media news feeds about online casinos with that offering. Advertising regulations mean that sites must allow users to decide whether or not to ‘allow cookies’ that track their internet use, meaning that they have the freedom to choose whether or not they will see such targeted advertisements.

There are so many ways in which technology has helped online casinos to thrive. As tech continues to develop, we can expect to see so many new, innovative creations that will give online casino players great, entertaining experiences.
