Artificial blood
The main purpose served by blood is oxygen carriage to organs of the body.

Substitute of Biological Blood:

These are substances which act like biological blood and are used in cases requiring a blood transfusion.

Purpose:

The main purpose served by blood is oxygen carriage to organs of the body. The artificial blood synthesized so far are serving functions varying from carrying oxygen to the function of volume expansion. Thus, volume restoration can be done with the help of these substances. These substitutes are mostly under clinical trials.

History:

Blood was considered supernatural having magical properties.  Many of the rituals were performed related to blood.

Many beliefs are still followed. Several TV programs focused on the theme of blood like the vampires drinking human blood for survival. Jehovah’s witnesses are obligated to not receive or donate any blood-related products according to their beliefs even in case of matter of life and death.

The history of blood transfusion dates back to very old civilization but documented research on this topic started after William Harvey discovered in the 16th century that blood flows in the arteries and veins. The blood transfusion often proved fatal. So different transfusions were tried like liquids from cows, goats, human milk as well as beer.

The first cross-matched blood transfusion was done in the 20th century in Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. Later advancements led to the Blood Component Therapy in which blood was separated into different components, which has made whole blood transfusion obsolete.

Progress in the field led to improvements in the safety of blood transfusion with respect to decreasing transmission of blood-borne diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and C etc.

Who needs it?

Artificial blood is used in cases which require a blood transfusion.

The situations include;

  1. Patients of hemorrhagic shock: a state of decreased perfusion of organs due to the increased amount of bleeding.
  2. In case of emergency situations like roadside accidents
  3. In situations when blood donation is not accessible or not available such as remote or far-flung areas
  4. To meet the high demand for blood transfusion

Types of Synthetic blood:

  1. Perfluorocarbon-based
  2. Hemoglobin-based
  3. Stem cells

Perfluorocarbon Based Artificial Blood:

Perfluorocarbons are insoluble in blood and thus can be added in water in little amount. Further to make blood like composition several other materials are added which include antibiotics, salts, minerals, nutrients, and vitamins.

The small size particles of PFC can enable them to traverse through capillaries. PFC solutions can carry oxygen so well. This is why they are referred to as “Liquid Breathing.”

They can be heat sterilized and can effectively deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. PFC’s can be removed from blood within 48hrs by normal clearance mechanisms of the body. These are suspended in albumin emulsions. Its use was associated with a reduction in ischemic complications but an increase in congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema.

Hemoglobin-Based Artificial Blood:

Hemoglobin is the predominant protein present in the RBCs.  It is the main protein responsible for oxygen carriage in the blood. One molecule of hemoglobin can bind four molecules of oxygen. It comprises 33% of the cell mass.

HemAssist, a cross-linked hemoglobin was introduced by Baxter Healthcare. It was the most widely studied of the hemoglobin-based blood substitutes, used in more than a dozen animal and clinical studies. It reached Phase III clinical trials but failed due to increased mortality due to severe vasoconstrictive complications.

Stem Cells:

Stem cells can give rise to the variety of cells. Therefore, these cells can be utilized for the production of blood cells. In turn, can serve the function of transfusable blood. Those stem cells, which lead to the formation of blood cells are called hematopoietic stem cells.  The cultured cells produced by such methods possessed the same quality of hemoglobin regarding their morphology and content. These cells also had a normal lifespan as compared to the normal red blood cells.

The blood is made from the hematopoietic stem cells removed from umbilical cord between the mother and fetus of humans after birth using a method called blood pharming.

FDA has approved the safety of the product and its use can reduce millions of costs used in blood transfusion.

Need of the hour!

The blood requirement in the US is quite high as after every two seconds someone in the US needs blood. In the U.S. alone, 41,000 donated pints are needed every day and although an estimated 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10 percent of that eligible population actually do each year.

This is why we need synthetic blood.

Concerns and expectations:

Artificial blood is expected to provide the following;

  • No concern of cross matching
  • Good oxygen carrying capacity
  • Good volume expansion
  • No concern of transmission of blood-borne diseases
  • No risk of immune suppression
  • No concern of chronic blood storage
  • No risk of hemolytic reactions
  • Transfusable in case of restrictions of blood transfusions according to religious beliefs
  • It can keep the patient alive for 48 hours in case of an emergency situation before the patient can be transferred to a medical facility. For example, in the case of the military

Conclusion:

Artificial Blood is underway with the idea of saving lives but there are many theoretical uses which come in mind of researches. Can the PFC be used in case of Scuba drivers, the mountain climbers or the land athletes for liquid breathing? These are all fantastic recreational ideas of technology but it may freak out people when considering the use of PFC injections or the liquid in the masks. Hence, most of the time it will be used for saving lives.

In the future, lab-grown synthetic blood can revolutionize medical care by providing a far-reaching solution to keeping people in need supplied with blood regardless of type or donor. While the artificial blood is about to go through human trials, there is still a long road ahead for a full-scale success of synthetic blood. However, these developments can possibly change the future of mankind itself.

  1. Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) predicted the end of the world, IN WRITING, numerous times. Not once did they come true. They truly are known for their ‘False Predictions’ the world over.

JWs are taught that they alone are TRUE Christians and that all other people not JW will soon be destroyed. This is no exaggeration.

JWs will allow their own children TO DIE rather than accept a life saving blood transfusion even in severe medical emergencies. It has already happened THOUSANDS of times!

Just like this mother died unnecessarily! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/shropshire/7078455.stm

    Two recently in Canada! http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42002996

Or this teenager that also DIED: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/8690785.stm

This pregnant JW and her baby died.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3027599/Jehovah-s-Witness-baby-die-refuses-blood-transfusion-seven-months-pregnant-cancer-80-chance-surviving-treatment.html

JW’s NEEDLESSLY die for this sorry blood policy today.

From the same organization that has an entire 100 + year history of similar bad and embarrasing policies.

As a 15 year active JW (and an elder) here is my own story: http://www.bibletoday.com/archive/JW_Disassociation_letter_by_Vinny.htm#.W0E7_K2ZMVc

JWs used to forbid Vaccinations and Organ Transplants (calling a life saving transplant “Cannibalism”) for a combined 33 years.

This JW elder refused a kidney transplant and DIED only to have JWs say transplants are now OK 2 years later. http://ajwrb.org/debbie-shards-story

JWs enforce extreme shunning for any JW that decides to leave their religion or who commits a sin without showing enough repentance in front of the elders.

I have literally seen parents cut off all ties with their children solely because the kid did not want to remain a JW but went in another direction.

Even the ex-JWs who leave the religion on their own, who are 100 percent truthful, sincere, love God, pay taxes, help others and more are still SHUNNED by all current JWs and marked as godless, proud, sinning apostates. The Awake magazine recently called them “mentally diseased”.

And MANY contemplate suicide because the penalties of losing everything are simply TOO MUCH TO TAKE.

But an honest question is: Why do so many JWs leave after being one time followers?

As I eventually found out, the JW religion did say, IN WRITING, that the end would come in 1914 and then again in 1925. Was Jehovah directing all that? 1914 and 1925 came and went! They were proven false predictions. Period.

They also said the end very likely would happen in 1975 and even commended (in the watchtower) witnesses for selling their houses and pioneering because of it.

    But 1975 came and went!

They also said (for many decades) that the end would come before the generation born in 1914 passed away. In fact up until 1995 it was written inside each Awake magazine cover. Only they then had to change that meaning as well (including the Awake masthead) because that generation CAME AND WENT TOO.

I was an active JW (and elder) for 15 years before leaving because of the blood and fractions policy 10 yrs ago. Today I’m shunned by all JWs simply because I left the religion.

Most JWs simply accept everything the Watchtower teaches and says as “food from God”. Just like I did.

Most believe God has chosen the Watchtower Society as his “channel”, which provides food from God Himself to their religion and ONLY their religion.

But an honest look at the facts of the JW religion shows God has not chosen the WT for anything!

    Take a LOOK: http://www.freeminds.org/history/part2.htm

ALL FROM THEIR OWN LITERATURE WITH DATES & PAGES TO SEE FOR YOURSELVES!!!

Pages and pages of mistakes, embarrassments, false predictions, medical disasters, weird science, doctrinal failures and more for over 100 years now!

Obviously ‘GOD’ would not get things wrong like this. Obviously ‘GOD’ did not provide bad food like that for their entire history.

But most JWs have no idea about these things. They’re told to stay away from anything critical of their religion.

For example: Was God’s spirit with JWs when they said Organ Transplants were a “conscience matter” in 1961?

    OR,

Was God”s spirit with WT when they THEN SAID Organ Transplants are same as “Cannibalism” in 1967 and forbid them?

OR, was God’s spirit with the WT when they THEN SAID Organ Transplants are NOT the same as cannibalism in 1980 and now allow them?

Was God behind all those changes each time? Did ((GOD)) get all those things wrong each time? How many JWs like that elder above DIED by refusing kidney transplants, only later on to be told they’re OK to have now?

Which is why some end up taking their lives due to losing their family or feel compelled to speak out about it, like me right here and now.

And now because I walked away JWs are demanded to shun you for life (including your very own family).

Examine this religion and ask as many questions as you can!

    Vinny
